The Faculty of Kinesiology is an academic, educational, and research institution of higher education in the Republic of Croatia and one of the younger faculties of the University of Zagreb. The subject-matter core content of the integrated (undergraduate and graduate) university Master's and the postgraduate Doctoral studies is kinesiology. From the very beginning the mission of the Faculty has been the symbiosis of educational (professional training) and elite research work.
The integrated undergraduate and graduate university study of kinesiology is a study which lasts five years (ten semesters), during which, in the first six semesters, all students attend classes of the same study programme which consists of courses in basic kinesiological disciplines and its interdisciplinary fields. Upon enrolling in the fourth year of their study (VII. semester) each student must select one obligatory module in education, in addition to which they must also choose one module in the field of applied kinesiology, which provides them with an additional qualification after completing their study and enables them to work in the field of a selected sport, physical recreation, kinesitherapy or sports management. After completing the university study of kinesiology all students acquire the academic title Master of Kinesiology and a qualification for working in educational institutions at all levels of the educational system.
Pursuant to their selected module in one of the fields of applied kinesiology, students who graduate from the university study of kinesiology also acquire an additional qualification of the same degree which is added to the basic academic title. This provides each graduate at the university study of kinesiology to acquire a double academic title and two professional qualifications of the same level – Master of Kinesiology in:
a) education and
b) a selected sport or
kinesiological recreation or
kinesi theraphy or
sports management.
Masters of kinesiology actualize their knowledge and skills by performing all forms of teaching physical education classes in the educational system of the Republic of Croatia, from the preschool level to the postsecondary education level. They are also qualified to organize and conduct all forms of extracurricular intramural activities, as well as for a variety sporting and sports recreational programmes for their pupils and students in educational institutions, in their city, municipality, county, and at the state level. Within the area of competitive sports they manage sports activities for selected groups of children, teenagers and adult athletes focused on sports achievements and high performance. They also organize physical recreation for youngsters and adults and implement kinesitherapeutic procedures as well as sports programmes for the persons with disabilities. They are qualified to establish scientifically the process of exercising and to assess the expected kinesiological effects produced in physical education teaching, as well as the training effects reflected in improvements of sport performance and achievements. They are also qualified to discuss the health-related issues with regard to the underpinning well-being benefits in the participants of kinesiological (sporting) activities.
The Faculty is an important scientific research centre in the Republic of Croatia where fundamental and applied research is carried out in the fields of general and applied kinesiology and in the cognate or adjacent, mainly anthropological, scientific disciplines. Nowadays, the body of Croatian kinesiological knowledge is based upon a respectable number of more than 5000 reference items, comprising scientific and professional journal papers, conference contributions, books and parts in books, research project reports, master and doctoral theses. These scientific products are the results of the experimentally oriented investigations accomplished within the regular research activities of the Faculty, scientific projects, or expertise studies.
