The Faculty offers one postgraduate (doctoral) study in Agricultural Sciences. The programme lasts six-semesters (180 ECTS), and after completing their course of study the students are awarded with an academic title of Doctor of sciences in the scientific area of biotechnical sciences and the scientific field of agriculture. Students can also enroll three Postgraduate Specialist studies in Animal Sciences, Fisheries and Executive MBA in Agribusiness and Commerce. The duration of studies in Animal Sciences and Fisheries is one academic year (two-semesters, 60 ECTS) while duration of Executive MBA in Agribusiness and Commerce is two academic years (four-semesters, 120 ECTS). After the completion of the studies students are awarded with the academic title of University Specialist in Fisheries or University Specialist in Animal Sciences or University specialist MBA Agr. Certified by International Network of MBA studies AgriMBA.
There are many employment possibilities for graduates in agribusiness companies, agricultural institutes and governmental or university departments and laboratories. They can work in banks or insurance companies as risk estimators or as agricultural inspectors, agents in international agricultural companies, journalists in the field of agriculture, landscape architects. Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology was founded in year 1980 as an independent academic and scientific institution, but studies of Technology and Biotechnology have a much longer tradition. In 1970 Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology came out of Technical Faculty as an independent unit. First graduate programmes of Food Technology and Biochemical engineering started in 1984 and in 1995 revised doctoral studies of Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering, Food Technology and Nutrition started. From the academic year 2005/06 new bachelor and master programmes in accordance with the Bologna Declaration were introduced The Faculty annually enrols 180 students into three bachelor studies – Biotechnology, Food Technology and Nutrition, as well as 180 students into five master studies – Food Engineering, Food Safety Management, Bioprocess Engineering, Molecular Biotechnology and Nutrition. There is one Postgraduate study offered - Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering, Food Technology and Nutriton and two Postrgraduate Specialist studies: Postgraduate Specialist studies in Food Quality and Safety and Postgraduate Specialist Studeis in Food Management.
The research is of high international standard and is world-leading in several areas, such as production and application of probiotic starter cultures, mathematical modelling, optimisation and process control in biotechnology, waste water treatment, membrane bioreactors, characterization of food powders, high pressure and ultrasound in food technology and biotechnology, bioactive compounds, nutrition.
Students can choose one of three BA studies in duration of three years and 180 ECTS. After completion of a BA study, graduate students have fair possibilities of finding employment or they can continue their education at one of five MA studies offered, in duration of two years and 120 ECTS. The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of the University of Zagreb is the only faculty of its kind in Croatia. It was established in 1898 as the University’s fourth faculty. At that time, it operated as the Forestry Academy within what was then the Faculty of Philosophy. With its long-standing tradition and high-quality programmes, it soon became the leader among higher education educational and scientific forestry institutions in this part of Europe, and one of the leading forestry faculties in Europe. Since then, the Faculty of Forestry has been constantly growing and systematically developing excellence in education and research in forestry, wood technology and related areas, which is based on the establishment of quality systems, on the transfer and application of knowledge for the welfare and prosperity of all members of the community. Today, the Faculty of Forestry consists of the Department of Forestry and the Department of Wood Technology. These include 11 institutes, 5 training and research forest centres and 2 hunting grounds. To date, 8 272 students have completed undergraduate programmes at the Faculty, 685 students have completed a graduate programmes, 287 students have completed the postgraduate programme and 433 students have completed specialist postgraduate programmes. The Faculty, with its student-centred work priorities, and in collaboration with the sector of economy and public sector in Croatia and abroad, has been actively participating in the creation of knowledge and technologies in the field of Life and Environmental Sciences.
The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology offers three undergraduate study programmes: Forestry; Urban Forestry, Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection, and Wood Technology. The programmes have duration of 3 years (6 semesters; 180 ECTS credits). The Faculty organizes four graduate study programmes: 1. Forestry, with two specializations, a. Silviculture, Forest Management, and Wildlife Management, and b. Forestry Techniques, Technology and Management; 2. Urban Forestry, Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection; 3. Wood Products Design and 4. Wood Technology Processes. These programmes have duration of 2 years (4 semesters; 120 ECTS credits). At all programme levels, students participate in classes in newly equipped classrooms and laboratories, and at the training and forest research centres. Field classes enable students to acquire practical knowledge, and are held at the Faculty's 5 centres, distributed among all the important climatic zone forest communities in Croatia, of which the Faculty is particularly proud.
Students completing Bachelor’s and Master's programme in Forestry acquire the necessary knowledge for employment in complex companies that manage state forests, in agencies and offices that manage private forests, in state ministries having a forestry component in their structures, in county and municipal offices for agriculture and forestry, in forest institutes, etc.
Students completing Bachelor’s and Master's programme in Urban Forestry find employment in national and nature parks, horticulture companies, state agencies and offices for environmental protection and conservation, state ministries having an environmental protection and nature conservation component in their structures, county and municipal offices for environmental protection and conservation, etc.
Students completing Bachelor’s and Master’s programme in Wood Technology are competent to find employment not only in companies in the wood processing industry, but also in companies and institutions dealing with design, architecture and construction. The acquired knowledge can also be applied in state ministries, agencies and inspection services that include wood use and processing in their structures.
Research is conducted in two fundamental scientific areas: forestry and wood technology. Scientific research work, in the framework of both domestic and international scientific projects, is characterised by the high international standards of quality. Research is carried out in newly equipped laboratories, most of which are authorized, and at the training and research forest centres. Research results are published in international and domestic journals. The Faculty publishes 3 scientific journals and 1 scientific/professional journal.
