The Academy of Dramatic Art is the oldest Croatian higher education institution offering study programs in performing and audiovisual arts. Within its theater, film and dance departments it covers almost all aspects of dramatic art on a practical artistic, theoretical and scientific level. At the Academy of Dramatic Art, there are eight departments with 10 undergraduate and 15 graduate study programs. All undergraduate studies last 6 semesters, resulting in 180 ECTS credits after completion, and all graduate studies last 4 semesters, which equates to 120 ECTS credits.
The Academy of Dramatic Art consists of theatrical departments – Acting, Dramaturgy, Theater Directing and Radiophony (Broadcasting), Dance, Production (theater), and film departments – Film and TV Directing, Cinematography, Editing and Production (film). With such structure, which brings together almost all performing and audiovisual arts professions under one roof, the Academy provides its students with a broad practical and theoretical insight into theater and film practices. This also encourages creative networking of students of different arts during their studies and their future professional cooperation after graduation.
All undergraduate studies provide bachelors with the basic knowledge and skills needed to work within their profession. Competences acquired at the end of the undergraduate level in a particular department are an excellent basis for continuing studies in the graduate program of the same department, but also in the graduate programs of other departments of the Academy of Dramatic Art and related higher education institutions in Croatia and abroad. Graduate studies at the Academy of Dramatic Art encourage students to independent authorial, project, artistic-research work and active cooperation with the professional scene, which results in a high degree of their employability in the creative industries.
Collaboration of students from different departments, either mentored or under artistic guidance of their teachers, is one of the most important advantages of studying at the Academy of Dramatic Art. Through this type of cooperation, students gain professional experience even before completing their studies and are, upon graduation, in great demand on the Croatian labor market and highly competitive on European ones. Here are the most common career prospects that are presently on the market: Actor or Performer, Stage Director, Theatre Director, Artistic Director, Dramatist, Film Screenwriter, Film Critic, Theatre Critic, Film Director, TV Director, Cinematographer, Photo-Reporter (Photographer), Lighting Designer, Camera Operator, Colourist / Lighting Reader, Cinematographer – Crane Operator, Trick Cinematographer (Animation), Film Producer, Theatre Producer, Theatre Administrator, Editor (Cutter), Sound Editor, Sound designer, Picture Mixer and Directing Secretary (Script).
The Academy of Dramatic Art focuses its artistic and scientific research on the field of audiovisual and performing arts, for which students are educated through undergraduate and graduate study programs.

The Academy of Fine Arts was founded in June 1907. From the very start its faculty was comprised of the most renowned Croatian artists and over the years the Academy itself has produced numerous great artists, many of whom returned to teach the next generation. Today its faculty is comprised of 80 professors distributed within six departments. As a constituent unit of the University of Zagreb, the Academy organizes and conducts higher education study programmes in the field of Fine Arts, prepares the students for professional activity based on contemporary artistic and scientific achievements and methods, and promotes international cooperation in higher education. Throughout its history, the Academy has attained very high artistic standards and created a significance of its own, in terms of both its educational standards and artistic creations.
Education in the field of Fine Arts provides an environment in which students can master the basics of all visual arts disciplines and develop their creative abilities and independent expression. The Academy currently offers six study programmes - Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Arts, Art Education, Art Conservation and Restoration, and Animated Film and New Media. All Bachelor’s programmes emphasize a strong foundation in the classical artistic skills and techniques (drawing and modelling from nature, traditional graphic techniques), whereas the Master’s programmes encourage original and creative individual development in the field of visual arts. In addition to the above courses, students have the opportunity to specialize in selected areas such as graphic design and small-scale sculpture. Art education programmes additionally include teaching theory and skills as well as a significant portion of art history courses. Art conservation and restoration studies focus on artistic-scientific education of experts who will be able to work on demanding heritage monument sites. Animation and new media programme places emphasis on educating professionals: authors of classical animated film, computer animated film, multimedia artists, video and experimental film, digital film as well as creative artists who can easily find their place in the film industry.
Employment opportunities for graduates are constantly changing and growing. It has been observed that graduates do not adhere strictly to one medium or discipline. The majority demonstrate the ability to adapt to different kinds of creative work within the framework of visual arts. Graduate students either work as free-lance artists or are employed in art institutes, museums, galleries, culture centres, publishing houses, marketing industry, tourist agencies, educational institutions, television, design studios, restoration institutes, multimedia centres, non-governmental organizations, etc.
Research is carried out in the following fields: visual arts, development of art projects in the field of art practice (studio based research), multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific research in the field of art education, organization and delivery of professional specialization programmes in the field of university visual arts education, projects in collaboration with cultural institutions in the local community.
