Meeting with the BMW Group - Collaboration Project INSIGHT: Status and Expansion Planning

On December 17th 2024, representatives from the University of Zagreb met with representatives from the BMW Group Munich. The University of Zagreb attendees included Prof. Stjepan Lakušić, Rector, Prof. Tomislav Mlinаrić, Vice-Rector, Prof. Zdenko Tonković, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (UNIZAG FSB), Academician Bojan Jerbić, and Marko Švaco, Head of CRTA - Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technology and the project INSIGHT (Intelligent Data Models for Battery Cell Production) at UNIZAG FSB. The BMW Group attendees were Mr. Moritz Poremba, Head of Battery Cell Recycling Technology Development at the BMW Group, and Mr. Ivan Rumenović, Leader of the project INSIGHT at BMW Group.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the results and potential expansion of the ongoing collaboration project INSIGHT between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at University of Zagreb and BMW Group. The project focuses on researching and developing solutions for optimizing battery cell production using artificial intelligence. The project team, which includes professors, doctoral candidates, and students from the University of Zagreb FSB as well as BMW Group researchers, has been collecting and structuring existing battery cell production data. Using this data, they are developing AI prediction models to identify opportunities for improving production performance, enhancing quality, and reducing costs. The INSIGHT project is being conducted across two locations – at CRTA in Zagreb and the BMW Group Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) in Munich.

A follow-up meeting will be scheduled to further explore this potential collaboration extension.
