UNESCO CHAIR OF GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Round Table

Beyond the Crisis: Funding Research Universities in Economic Recession

3 - 4 December 2010,
The Conference Hall of the Rectorate, University of Zagreb,
Trg maršala Tita 14, Zagreb

Organized by the University of Zagreb UNESCO Chair for Governance and Management of Higher Education group (Matko Barišić, Pavel Gregorić, Ksenija Grubišić, Helena Jasna Mencer, Marko Rogošić, Hrvoje Šikić and Ksenija Turković), with generous assistance of Aleksa Bjeliš.

In times of economic recession, many academic institutions are faced with financial cuts that threaten normal research and teaching activities. Universities and institutes are forced to adapt to that situation, and there is a variety of measures and steps they can take in order to secure its functioning and development. One aim of this round table is to formulate and explore possible measures and steps. Apart from actions that research academic institutions can take on their part, there are reasons to think that investing more money into research and teaching, both from the public and the private sector, is a more promising way of tackling economic recession. The other and perhaps more urgent aim of this round table is to investigate these reasons and identify preconditions for the success of such a policy.

The round table will be organized into three thematic sessions: (1) Global Trends, (2) Regional Approaches, and (3) Public vs. Other Sources of Funding. International experts as well as academics and policy-makers from the region and from Croatia will come together to share their views on these matters and exchange ideas in a stimulating environment.
