Psychological counselling

Psychological counselling

Students who seek counseling usually are experiencing discomfort or dissatisfaction in some aspect of their personal lives. Some common reasons are concerns about personal adequacy, feeling overwhelmed, or feeling sad or anxious without knowing why as well as problems with family or significant other(s).

The Centre provides short-term (10-12 sessions) individual psychological counselling based on cognitive-bihevioral therapy.  Appointments are arranged on a weekly basis and last for up to 60 minutes. Counselling is designed to help you work through your difficulties, to help you understand yourself better and find better ways of managing. Working with a counsellor may help you to see your problem(s) with greater clarity, get some insight into its origins, and think about how to move forward.

Areas within which you can seek help are:

  • exam anxiety
  • depressed mood
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • experiencing excessive worry
  • personal difficulties (e.g., relationships)
  • experiencing loneliness and homesickness
  • difficulties in coping with stress
  • anxiety when engaging in social contacts
  • problems with decision making
  • lack of confidence
  • low self-esteem
  • and other issues close to these areas
