University of Zagreb International Relations Office will be hosting a Welcome Week for students arriving at the University of Zagreb for the foreign exchange programme during the summer semester of the 2021-22 academic year.
Most of the students, around 360 in total, are visiting Zagreb to study as part of the Erasmus+ mobility programme for EU countries, which allows for a reciprocal number of arriving foreign students and national students departing for the student exchange in the same countries. The value of the project and the awarded non-repayable scholarships for the academic year 2021/2022 totals about 3.35 million euros for Programme Countries of the European Union (KA131). The greatest sum, around 2.05 million euros, is intended for scholarships benefiting national students leaving for the foreign student exchange in EU countries.
The Welcome Week, to be held between February 21st and March 4th, has been organised according to the epidemiological situation of the coronavirus pandemic and measures issued by the National Civil Protection Headquarters. Instead of the traditional Welcome Day the International Relations Office used to organise as a social gathering, a considerable part of the event was planned to be conducted online or in smaller groups.
Members of the International Relations Office will present the University of Zagreb and the possibilities of studying in English at the University, as well as learning Croatian for foreigners. Croatian students from the Erasmus Student Network Zagreb (ESN Zagreb) - an association whose work is co-funded by the International Relations Office - will make a presentation for foreign students on studying and the student life in Zagreb, and inform the students about the associated activities to be organised throughout the semester, all conforming to the epidemiological situation and measures currently in effect.
The students will receive welcoming gifts including printed materials on the University of Zagreb and the Erasmus+ EU mobility programme. The Welcome Week features diverse activities: a guided tour through the historico-cultural city centre of Zagreb, academic lectures at the University on the topics of Croatian culture and heritage, Croatian education system, the religious heritage of Croatia, and culture shock and acculturation. The programme also includes an organ recital at the Church of Saint Blaise. The Welcome Week and Welcome Day programme is financed entirely by the Erasmus+ mobility programme funds.
The guided tours through the historico-cultural centre of Zagreb are organised in several timeslots to keep the size of the student groups limited. Instead of a one-day field trip, the International Relations Office will include tickets for the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Ethnographic Museum with the students' welcoming gifts. Students will be able to use their tickets individually by July 15th 2022.
